Post-Operative Instructions for Crowns and Bridges

Proper brushing and flossing are essential in maintaining crowns and bridges. We do not recommend flossing around your crown or bridge for the first 24 hours while the cement is hardening.  After the first 24 hours normal brushing and flossing are recommended.  For bridge work, a floss threader will be required in order to properly clean food from under the bridge.  The use of an electric tooth brush such as the Rotodent is also strongly encouraged.  Please consult with our hygienist for hygiene instructions and options.

It is normal for small pieces of cement to work their way out of the gum area for several days after the initial cementation.  This should stop after several days.

Avoid hot, cold and heavy chewing for several weeks after initial crown placement.

Minor bite adjustments may become necessary after initial placement of your crown or bridge.  If you feel like you need a bite adjustment, contact our office.

Proper maintenance and care of your crown or bridge, including routine checkups cleanings as prescribed by our office, are essential to assure the long-term success of your treatment.
